Learn to use your camera's basic controls and features and gain a better understanding of the elements of photographic composition and techniques. Learn about standard shooting modes, image quality, and image size, white balance, ISO, shutter speed and aperture settings, exposure metering modes, exposure compensation, media card formatting, and focusing (both auto and manual). Learn the use of shutter speed and aperture settings to achieve a proper exposure and use the camera's histogram feature to evaluate photographs as they are made. A brief overview of photo-editing techniques is also covered.
The class will meet one session at a local place of interest to practice making use of what has been learned in class and to ask questions of the instructor regarding issues and difficulties they encounter while in the field.
Owners of point and shoot cameras, which may not have all the features that will be covered in class, are welcome to take the class, but should probably talk with the instructor, before or at the first class, about how they can best benefit from the instruction. All students should bring their camera manuals with them to the first couple of classes.
